Day three to seven at Wood Sculpture Live

Published by , posted 14 April 2011

In my previous post I’ve mentioned how I’m carving a 200 year old 6 tonne log at Wood Sculpture Live.

Art Lift manoeuvres the log

Day three, Art Lift manoeuvres the log onto it’s backside. All of a sudden it all looks so different.

Oak log is cut

Day four, A decision is made to cut a chunk off the log. Art lift can’t lift more than 2.5 tonne, six days left and I’m finding it difficult to resolve the form.

Chainsaw carved roughed out form

Day five and six, I’m left with a roughed out chainsaw carved form.

Carving the Oak into form

Day seven, onto the angle grinder to accentuate some of the forms and bring logic into some of the lines and forms.

I’ve spent the first three nights remodelling my designs in clay, becoming simpler each time. I’ve arrived at something completely different than expected, though I’m starting to see elements of my initial intentions back in the form.

Carving with the chainsaw you have a tendency to cut too much off, it’s difficult with wood this size as you’re pitching your saw at angles that are physically challenging. If the log was a little lighter I’d be able to turn it around and use the weight of the saw.
